What is climate change?

Climate change refers to significant and lasting changes in temperature, weather patterns, and other climate systems over extended periods of time. While climate naturally varies, human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas), deforestation, and industrial activities, have significantly accelerated global warming, causing disruptions to natural ecosystems, weather events, and communities.

What are the main causes of climate change?

The primary cause of current climate change is the increase in greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. These gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), trap heat from the sun, causing the Earth’s average temperature to rise. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels for energy, deforestation, and agriculture, contribute the most to the release of these gases.

How does climate change affect the environment?

Climate change affects the environment in numerous ways, including:

  • Rising sea levels: Melting polar ice caps and glaciers, along with the expansion of seawater due to higher temperatures, are causing global sea levels to rise, threatening coastal communities.
  • Extreme weather events: More frequent and intense storms, heatwaves, droughts, and floods are becoming common in many regions, impacting agriculture, infrastructure, and human health.
  • Loss of biodiversity: As ecosystems change, many species struggle to adapt to the new conditions, resulting in habitat loss and extinction threats for wildlife.
  • Ocean acidification: Increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere also dissolves in the ocean, making the water more acidic and threatening marine life, especially coral reefs.

Adaptation and Mitigation Measures in Our Community

Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and its effects are being felt globally, including right here in our community. In this portfolio, I will share insights into the impacts of climate change locally, how we are adapting, and the efforts we are making to mitigate its effects. Additionally, I will highlight my personal contributions to combat climate change and the actions being taken by community leaders.

Interview with Wagner Luiz Santos on Climate Action Policies

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Wagner Luiz Santos, Botanical and ecological bryologist, about the measures being adopted at the local level to address climate change. In this interview, they shared insights on the community’s efforts to combat climate change and the challenges they face.

Wagner Luiz Santos (botanical and ecological bryologist): "As a community, we are dedicated to implementing policies that not only protect our environment but also improve the quality of life for our residents. One of our key focuses is reducing carbon emissions through a shift to renewable energy, improving waste management, and promoting sustainable practices in all sectors of life. We are also focused on community resilience, ensuring that we are prepared for climate-related disasters."

Key Policy Measures Discussed:

  • Solar and Wind Energy Initiatives: A partnership with local businesses to increase renewable energy sources.
  • Flood Management: Implementing green infrastructure to absorb water and reduce the risk of flooding.
  • Sustainable Agriculture: Supporting local farmers in adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices.

The conversation also covered challenges such as limited funding for large-scale infrastructure projects and the need for greater public awareness about climate change.
